BAM Magazine
#548
|
| Southern California edition Written by Amy De
Zellar |
| "Chanteuse Mallari has a robust voice
that manages to fuse the enthusiasm of Bjork and Lena Lovich with
earthly finesse of |
| Chrissy Hynde. On rhythm guitar she lays
down an energetic sonic lattice work and yes, Santiago's lead playing
does tend |
| to lend a Pixie-ish quality to their sound....."

|
| "Rythmic, sweet, pop-ish and more..........The music
is strong here and there is a perfect meshing of vocal talent and
instrumental ability. |
|
This is one of the bands you should definitely try
to see playing live, their stamina and energy is just as contagious
on-stage as well as off."

Show Review Written by
Brian Broccoli Potpourri Roses January
1999 Vol.1, Issue #4
|
| "Known to the world as the Martinis,
Linda Mallari stood up front on rhythm guitar & lead vocals while
Joey Santiago the one & only, |
stood to the side & worked his lead guitar with a prowess that captivated
the crowd...Linda perhaps had the most fun out of anyone in the club.
|
| She was always armed with a smile & some friendly,
between-song banter. Joey, however, looked as though he'd sooner crack
the safe at |
| Fort Knox than a smile. Linda's charismatic
singing, Joey's Joeyness & the band's This-is-the future-of Rock &
Roll music is guaranteed |
to bring those industry types sniffing around. So catch them at cozy,
local venues while you can..." |

|
| "It's always tough for a new band to carve
out an identity for itself. But the process gets even harder when
the band has been formed by |
| someone whose previous group was one of
the seminal forces in alternative rock. That's exactly the situation
facing guitarist Joey Santiago's |
| new band, The Martinis......Santiago was
an important part of the Pixies, whose music continues to shape the
sound of modern rock.... |
| But the fact is that the Martinis' music does somewhat
echo that of Santiago's old band. That can primarily be chalked up |
| to the fact that his guitar style was such an important
part of the Pixies' sound. "I would like to think that I still have |
| the sound,"Santiago admits. There are some important
differences between the bands though, starting most significantly
with Santiago's wife, |
| Linda Mallari, who plays guitar and handles the vocals
for the Martinis. Her voice is strong and melodious, and as the front
person |
|
for the band, she has an engaging personality...."
